The UBCO Commons Building is a multi-functional academic and social hub located at the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus. The buildings design is intended to reflect the unique culture and identity of the Okanagan region, while also creating a functional and welcoming space for students, faculty, and staff. One of the key design features of the building is its central atrium, which serves as a focal point for the entire space. The atrium is designed to resemble a traditional Indigenous gathering place. Natural rammed-earth walls are placed throughout the atrium that has utilized soils from the Okanagan area to create beautiful artwork. Wood beams are prominently featured throughout the building, providing a visual link to the local Indigenous community and its heritage. The buildings design also emphasizes the importance of connection between interior and exterior spaces, with numerous windows that provide abundant natural light and stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The windows are strategically placed to create visual connections between the interior and exterior spaces, allowing users to feel connected to the natural environment and enhance their sense of well-being. In addition to the windows, the buildings design includes several outdoor spaces that are seamlessly integrated with the buildings interior.
