Quesnel Fire Hall

Quesnel, BC

Completed 2023

Originally built in 1958, Fire Hall No. 1 has been serving the community of Quesnel for many years. The needs of the fire department have changed over time and building safety requirements have been amended. As a post-disaster building, the existing wood post and beam structure in the apparatus bay and replacing it with a new steel moment frame, columns, and beams while maintaining the functional requirements of the Fire Department. The exterior stairs and facade were removed, and the entrance was lowered to allow individuals to enter at grade and use the new stairs or elevator to proceed into the various interior levels. This change enabled greater community safety and engagement for all. The design team worked to optimize the layout, create new space for the protective gear lockers, protective gear cleaning and SCBA maintenance. They also implemented barrier-free provisions throughout the building. The exterior metal panel gives a durable, contemporary look to the building and uses local wood to add contrast and provide a warm aesthetic that highlights the main entrance and bay locations.

It's the previous structure, but obviously a lot of improvements. It's not only safer, but more user-friendly for us. Love it. It was a good, well-deserved upgrade."
