Architecture & Interior Design Architecture & Interior Design

North Okanagan Neurological Association (NONA)

The North Okanagan Neurological Association needed a playful, warm, and inviting facility for young clients and their families. The challenge was designing a facility in a somewhat restricted site, therefore building upward rather than out.

The design included many program areas and administration functions, with special attention to privacy and security.

Although the design is not literal, the concept of a treehouse is alluded
to in the main entry which provides shade and exterior seating space, and expresses itself as a tall, naturally lit play and waiting area on the second floor.

The roof is curved, much like the canopy of a tree. The interior space is vaulted with extensive use of natural wood, glass, and a playful use of colour throughout. The exterior oversized canopy is complete with ‘branches’ that act as supporting structures.
